Day 42. Up very early as today we must travel 700km south to Birdsville (mostly bitumen) following the Queensland border through the dry season of the Diamantina channel country. First stop the little town of Boulia famous for its Min Min Lights, more often described as a hovering luminescent ball of wizardry. As we passed through in daylight we regrettably missed the Min Min nightime lights but we did see numerous mirages on the horizon of lakes on the road and disappearing sandhills! Wow, maybe we are hallucinating from the heat of the day 22 degrees! Next stop Bedourie famous for nothing it seems and pretty unspectacular. Then the old Waddi Trees near Birdsville which are over 1,000 years old and harder than steel. Finally into Birdsville where we checked into the old pub for the night. Drove 36km out to Big Red, a massive sandhill in the Simpson Desert and climbed to the top. Spectacular views! Back to Birdsville for a hard earned beer at the famous pub and a good pub meal of lamb shanks and ravioli. A very long day but now closer to home..
