Hi everyone, hope you all had a great easter break, and are enjoying being back at work.
After a great time in Barcelona, we travelled to Madrid today. We ended up speinding 6 nights in Barcelona, and there's still stuff we want to do. So we're heading back again in a week. Mainly to see an FC Barcelona home game at Nou Camp (the biggest soccer stadium in Europe apparently) on Wednesday.
Nicola flew from London to spend Easter with us, which was great since we were all missing family at this time of year. We had a small stash of cadbury eggs from home, but an easter egg hunt in the hostel wasn't really going to work (we would've had to share with other people).
We did a pretty comprehensive tour of the city, thanks mainly to our 2-day tourist bus tickets. We cruised around on open-top, double-decker busses, getting off at any sights we wanted to visit. This pretty well filled 2 days, and took us to places we probably wouldn't have got to otherwise. Some of the most interestinng sights were designed by a modernist architect called Gaudi. Check out the photo gallery, coz words don't do them justice. Some of the highlights were:
-Casa Mila: an appartment block with no straight walls, and a heap of sculptures on the roof. The facade is supposed to look like waves, with balconies like seaweed.
-Park Guell: Originally designed as a private housing estate, but only 2 houses got built. It's now a park filled with interesting paths, seats, and mosaic lizard fountains. There were 2 buildings at the entrance that look like gingerbread houses (but didn't taste like gingerbread).
-Sagrida Familiar: a huge cahedral that is still under construction! Work began in the late 1800s, and is not expected to be complete until around 2080!!! The detail on every part of the building has to be seen to be believed.
Other cool stuff that we did was:
-Eating Tapas – great little snacks. English menu please...
-Walked along the beach (Still too cold for a swim)
-Drinking sangria (including a power hour of unlimited sangria at the start of a pub crawl)
-Eating Paella – actually a little disapointing, but we're going to try again at a better restaraunt
-Checking out the great food market
-A tour of Nou Camp stadium and museum
-An organised pub crawl
-Checked out the Barcelona Cathedral on easter Sunday
-Wandered around the site of the 1992 olympic games
We're heading for Madrid next, then probably San Sebastian on the North coast before heading back to Barcelona for the soccer. After that, we're probably headed to the South of France, and then Italy.
