Good king wenceslas looked out on the feast of steven, there the snow lay round about, deep and thick and even.....
Paul is making me do a journal entry for Prague and all that's in my head is songs. So I wrote down the only one I can think of at the moment that has a reference to Prague (a gold star to whoever knows what the reference to Prague is).
We arrived in Prague and were expecting a lot from this city (because basically everyone we've met whose been there has raved about it!). It wasn't a good start, firstly the train from Munich wasn't airconditioned and it was a stinking hot day, and an old man had stolen my seat and was snoring. Then we couldn't find the exit from the train station, it took us about 15 minutes to get out of the place! But luckily things went up from there (except for the fact that there were tourists and bachelor parties EVERYWHERE). The city was, as everyone says, very beautiful. There were amazing buildings everywhere and along the river was quite picturesque (plus beer was the cheapest liquid and after a couple of pints everything looked even better!). While in Prague we took in all the sites, we scrutinized the astronomical clock doing it's thing (a bit overrated!), moseyed across Charles Bridge, sojourned to Prague Castle and ascended the tower in St Vitus Cathedral (stench of BO quite overwelming in the confined space of the spiral staircase), checked out the powder tower, gazed in wonder at the National Museum, Paul taught me how to focus the camera before taking a photo (It's only been 5 months), and lost ourselves in the labyrinth of streets.
We took a day trip to Kutna Hora (note to self, a couple of hours would have been quite adequate). We didn't decide on this town because of it's quaint old fashioned square, nor the fact that it's cathedral rivals Pragues, nor for it's exhausted silver mine. We went there so we could visit the Bone Church, or Sedlec Ossuary as it's less commonly known. It was amazing. The bones from approximately 40,000 people (mostly victims of the plague) have been artistically arranged within the ossuary, there were great pyramids of bones and skulls, chandeliers, chalices, coat of arms and more (check out the photos).
We tried a few of the Czech specialties - Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen, Budweiser Budvar. And then of course we also tried some of the food, Goulash, Ribs, Dumplings.
Hmm all that talk of food is making me hungry, bye. Zilla
