On Tuesday night, we caught the overnight train from San Sebastian to Barcelona so we could see the FC Barcelona match.
The weather in San Sebastian was not kind to us, and we only had one sunny day for good sightseeing. Luckily for us, the hostel we stayed at had cable with a Fox channel in English and a batch of punch and a few drinking games also helped pass the rainy evenings. When the sun was out, we walked around La Concha Bay by the beach and caught the funicular to the top of Monte Igeldo where there is a great view of the bay, and the Jesus statue on top of Monte Urgill. Then we walked back around the bay, and climbed up Monte Urgill to visit Jesus.
San Sebastian has a reputation for some of the best Tapas in Spain, and we weren't disappointed. The best bit was that most of them were lined up on the bar, so our lack of Spannish language skills didn't stop us from sampling the best of them.
When we got into Barcelona, we dumped our bags and went inside Casa Mila (one of Gaudi's buildings). The design of this building is absolutely amazing, and there are exhibits inside detailing some design features of his other work which showed what a genius he was. Casa Mila has a rooftop littered with functional sculptures which we wandered around which was pretty sweet. Check out the photos in the Spain album.
That night we made our way to Camp Nou for the football (soccer) match between FC Barcelona and Getafe, a Semi-Final in the Copa Del Rei (a spanish cup).
Our seats were cheap, but gave a great view of the action (as the photos show). The stadium was almost full, probably around 80,000 people there (including a hundred or so Getafe fans in a cage at the back), making for an unforgettable atmosphere. It was a pretty good game, with FC Barca winning 5-2. We felt like we got value for money with seven goals scored in total. I managed to capture a couple of goals on video that I'll upload soon (make sure your volume is up to get the full effect).
We're leaving Spain today, hopefully heading to Avignon in Southern France if the trains work out.
Adios,
Paul.
