Arrived in Ko Phangan and got collected at the pier. When we went to check in the lady didn't have any recollection of our reservation. We aren't being very lucky with transfers and bookings at the mo. The lady rang the company that we'd booked with and they hadn't sent a fax or something along those lines to confirm our booking but instead of putting us in 2 bungalows we were put into a 10bed dorm but it was kept for the four of us which was grand and it had a beach and pool view.
At that stage a little bit if negotiation needed to come into play because there was no way that the dorm room even if it was only the 4of us would be the same price as 2 bungalows, so we got them to throw breakfast into the deal for the three morning that we were there. Saving us over 2,000 THB altogether.
It's a pretty nice place actually and the vibe is very chilled here. We relaxed for the evening and the next day went on a tour. Firstly we went to see a waterfall, now I was expecting this fab full gushing waterfall that we could swim under but eh no that wasn't exactly the case!! It was a mountain of rocks and a stream of water trickling down it... Ultimate disappointment because the waterfalls in Ko Phangan are meant to be amazing. Now either someone forgot to turn the tap on at the top of this mountain or the lazy stoner of a tour guide took us to the nearest one.
Then we went to you'll never guess it. A Chinese temple.. Yes a temple that looks like the other one million temples that we've been to. I didn't get too snappy happy here because I'm sure you've all seen enough pictures of temples at this stage.
We then got a boat out in the middle of the sea where we went snorkelling. It was the most choppy boat ride we've ever had and before we got into the sea we were all soaked!! When we got in it was pretty cool and we got to see a load of different fish and its amazing to see that they actually weren't that far from the top at all. When we were in the water the heavens absolutely opened and there was no stopping the rain. We all got back on board and made our way to Bottle island. The journey there was brutal, sitting in a bikini absolutely soaked and the pelting rain battering off you. Not my idea of fun.
When we made it to Bottle island thankfully the rain had settled and the sun came out. We got to spend about an hour there drying out and even hanging our soaked clothing out to dry. (Sure there was great drying!!) ;)
We then had lunch on the mainland which wasn't the nicest food I've had and we hung about while others went on their elephant trekking. We opted out this time because we'd already done it. After that we went back to the office where we started off and got ready for the kayaking. Now I thought we'd have a nice little route somewhere that we would be following the tour guide like we had when kayaking to the Dark Cave in Vietnam or when we were kayaking through the caves in Krabi. Well I must have been mad!! We walked across the main road to the sea. As we were getting into the kayak the tour guide said "Your going over to that island", pointing far away, "spend about 15minutes there and then come back". Then he says when pushing the kayak out to sea..."oh it's easy getting over to the island but its very hard getting back".
About 6-7 kayaks were sent on their way. Emer and I got on perfectly but it was s*** hard because we were trying to cross over the current. Claire was with some fella from Colorado and they didn't get on so well because they capsized half way but made their way to the island.
The whole 15 mins that we were on the island, all we could think of was how the hell were we going to get back because the water was getting really choppy and it was windy enough for a kite surfer. I'd a feeling that for us going against the current, sure it was going to be great Craic!! We all went on our way, all taking different routes but each as difficult as each other. We've obviously done something to piss the Thai people off because this was their way of punishing us.
Emer and I were heading towards a beach and when we saw the other kayaks pass it we then realised that the beach we were going to was in fact the wrong one. The 'tour guide' and I use that title lightly was very lucky he didn't have to come to that beach to collect his fecking kayak because I was ready to dump it there and walk back to get my stuff. We continued on and nearly got stuck while we passed through the pier because there was a chance in hell that we were going round it. When we FINALLY saw the right beach we paddled that kayak like we've never paddled before and abandoned it at the nearest opportunity! Your fuzzy headed your guide didn't look particularly happy that he had to walk down the beach to collect his kayak. All I could think was 'face, bothered, bothered, face, nnnnooooo!!'
We got back to the place we were staying and went for a nap ahead of the half moon party tonight!! We then got up had food and things didn't exactly go to plan from there. Claire and I appeared to have got ourselves a lovely bit of food poisoning. Meatballs are obviously not our friends!!
Claire went down like a tonne of bricks but I was like hell giving in and had my fair share of V&D and then decided all was good and made my way with Emer and Kela to the half moon party. I got my armband, I got my body parts painted and got to see what the half moon is all about and then I got myself a taxi home. Probably not the night I had planned but that's the way things turn out from time to time.
Luckily enough we had another night in Ko Phangan and didn't have to make a move the next day. There was a lot of sleeping done and slowly but surely we got back to normal or the closest thing to it. We made a move on Monday to Ko Samui where we'll be spending 3nights. We just had a ferry and then a short enough transfer.
