The national language spoken in Costa Rica is spanish. For this volunteer program, every member had to complete a Duolingo Course for the language. This came very easy to me because spanish is my first language.
Duolingo is an app that helps you learn new languages, for those who didn't know what it was. I actually found it to be very helpful and recreational. You get the option of "testing out" for each category if you know the language and dont want to do the full lesson. I tested out on every single category.
When you "test out," you get something like a mini quiz with about twenty questions that vary. Some are sentences with fill in the blanks, while others focus on vocabulary words or proper ways of speaking. You have three chances as you're doing the quiz. If you get three questions wrong, you either have to start the quiz all over or just do the lessons one by one.
I was actually able to complete the whole course without having to complete any lessons. This was a nice way of refreshing my mind and practicing my spanish at my own pace! I actually did enjoy it!
