Hi Folks
still enjoying Kununurra! Our next project was to explore the Kimberley. We found the GRR (4WD Gibb River Rd Bus) and made lots of plans as it was a hop on hop off bus service, only to find it was ceasing to run 5 days later. We were so disappointed so decided to do the whole run from here to Derby (12 hrs each way!) to see as much as we could. Martin (bus owner) had other plans when we rocked up the next am at 5.10am! Within 15 mins, we were kitted out with mossie dome etc and camping plans for the next few days! He dropped us at the BP station to grab some rations and we were off! Dave, our friendly driver, Meg, Barry and us had a ball the whole way, eventually dropping us off at Robert's place on Lennard river. Firstly, he showed us the large croc , reassuring us it was only a fresh water (freshie) Later, we found out it was a saltie and there were snakes in the grass as well! Robert left us in charge of his place to go off somewhere and 3 aboriginal boys arrived and introduced themselves and we all had a good laugh. Bed as usual, soon after sunset, after losing our tent again in the dark. Pam was sure that the large stone by the river was our tent, but it turned out to be a croc! The mossie dome was great , as it was just like a planitarium from our sleeping bags. Woken at 5am by a noisy flock of cockatoos and sat up to watch another sunrise. Dave arrived to pick us up, tooting his horn from a distance as it was his last trip! We had another great journey with a lovely french couple and stopped for another complimentary scone jam and cream at Ellen brae station. We taught the french couple lots of Aussie sayings (she didn't speak any english) and they later said it was the best day they had in Australia so far. Martin asked us to go back on his last trip (tues/wed) On Monday, Dave showed us around Kununurra in his ute, visiting the zebra rock art gallery, feeding the catfish in the river and then climbing Kelly's k*** for another wonderful view and sunset.
We decided to take up Martin's offer of a free trip to Manning gorge, as we enjoyed the GRR experience so much! On arriving at Manning gorge, we swam across the river(only freshies this time!) and walked 2hrs to the waterfalls over the mountain and were exhausted. Everyone was so friendly at the campsite, sitting around their log fires, but we were in bed by 6pm again as we couldn't stand the pace! To cheer Martin up, we greeted him in party hats and blowers, much to the amusement of everyone around! (photo later!) We had a fun trip back to Kununurra, calling at Ellen Brae for the 4th time for scones and jam, only to be asked by the elderly gentleman if we were the GRR "groupies". He was most amused!
We are on the road again now towards Broome and touring the Bungle Bungles tomorrow at 5am. Hope this finds you all well and in good spirits as we are.
