Hi Everyone
To view our photos, look via slideshow, as they are in the right order!
30/5/07 Had "Sam" overhauled in the Apollo depot in Darwin. They were great and fixed us up with mossie net for back of van, so we can keep it open at night and new chair for Pam. Tried to see as much of Darwin as we could in a short time eg fish and chips at Fisherman's wharf after negotiating unexpected major developments of dock area. Hitched a lift back with young Aussie as we couldn't face the embarrassing workmen a second time! Did "the business " and went to WWII oil storage tunnel tour much to the delight of the lady in charge and the museum. Went to our camp "concert" starring Thommo in his various disguises. After a few vinos, we were all getting very involved in the singing and dancing and needless to say, we were first up for the Rocky horror routine!
We went to Mindel evening markets , which is the place to see the amazing sunsets of "staircase to heaven". Bet you can't wait for another 2/52 for the phohots! (Broome) Mindel markets is renowned for its variety of foods from around the globe and crafts. Friday was sunset cruise night, with more beautiful sunset and champers and nibbles.
Saturday, we were really sad to leave Darwin as we had such a good time. We headed off to Litchfield NP to find the waterfalls and rockholes. Spent a great night in the safari bush camp, which turned out to have the best hot showers so far! Sunday, we went to wangi falls but were unable to do walks due to back burning (fire control in the cool season), so headed off to Katherine Gorge NP. We nearly killed ourselves doing the Windolf lookout walk in the middle of the day, climbing pebbly river beds up the mountain. Tuesday, we went for 3 gorge river cruise, climbing over rocks between boats, ending in the southern rockhole for swim and morning tea.
Next am we got up early as had learnt our lesson walking late in the day! We got a lift on the cruise across Katherine river, struggling up the steep bank, much to the amusement of the packed boat of school kids off on their cruise! This was a great walk to the northern rockhole and back.
Our next stop was Springvale homestead, the oldest in the NT. WE found a great camping spot by the billabong. This was to try to see more crocs on the night cruise, as if we weren't already crocked out!! Using torches to spot red eyes on the river, we finally arrived at the campsite for steak/salad to find a massive croc waiting for us with mouth wide open. We laughed at everyone who thought he was real and teased them as they took photos in the darkness only to run a mile when he suddenly moved towards us. He is the nightly local attraction and is very overfed! We also saw beautful turtles and barramundi in the water. We had more than enough vino and again lost our way back to the van!!
On the road again, leaving Katherine for Kununurra and stopped for the night in a free camp area with 13 other vans. Today, we tried to cross the border into western Australia with a fridge full of fruit and salad. "Quarentine Barry" shook his head and said we would have to either hand it over or eat it. We showed a bit of leg but as you can imagine this did not help!! So back to Keep NP for us and a walk. This turned out to be a great bonus as we found a fantastic walk and looked at some more aboriginal rock art, over 250 million yrs old. We turned up at the border, having stuffed ourselves, 6hrs later and this time, he let us through, very amused at us!! Then, he wouldn't stop talking!
We are now in Kununurra and have to be on the 5.30am 4WD bus for a return trip to Derby via a cattle station for 4 nights. More later...........
Hope you are all working hard, love from us both xx
