Hi guys :)
So this blog entry follows the first one! We spent a bunch of money on that internet access, but we were just happy to speak to you all. And we were really really pleased that we already had messages from you all!! Hope you don't mind too much that it's been a while since you've heard much news from us! We've just been finding our feet. Expect to be hearing loads more from now on.
We were sat in these army barracks (very surreal) and felt completely out of place. However! We met a nice lady who pointed us in the right direction for internet access in perth (even though we're now using a completely different place!)
So we walked back from the barracks and made our first dinner (2 bean and tomato pasta - mm) only problem was the prices on Rottnest, far from cheap! Dinner was yummy though anyways.
Initially we were quite nocturnal, not sleeping til about 5am as our bodies are still English!!! You'll be glad to hear this is improving though :) Whilst up though, we watched some 'interesting' programmes, one channel was dedicated solely to exercise machine adverts and one advert, lasting about an hour, particularly made us chuckle as Mr T made an unconvincing appearance. After this we slept in til about 2pm (oops) and missed our buffet breakfast altogether :( Amy's grandma was not pleased! We spent the rest of the day finding out about nightlife on the island (our conclusion: it was non-existent) probably getting a reputation! After this we went for a freezing cold swim (to the horror of the Australians!)
We ended up going to the Hotel bar at about 9 where the lovely bartender filled us in on good places to go in both W.A. and Australia, he'd been to England and had even heard of the MK Dons, we were happy to be making 'friends' already!
We're loving watching neighbours (it's so ahead though so we're fairly confused by some of it) it's things that remind us of home!
The next morning we made sure we were up in time to pack and get the buffest breakfast (we helped ourself to many teabags and spreads to take home) it was yummmmmmy! We then went, without Amy's grandma, for a walk firstly up to the lighthouse, which was beautiful, and then back to the barracks for Mary-Ann. Glad to report no sickness incidents on the ferry home!!
When back in Perth we went shopping for dinner which cost us about $38!! Unreal, that's like 20 something pounds. We made dinner (a rather bad macaroni cheese) after some phone calls home and then settled down to School of Rock with chocolate and Mary-Ann's washing up liquid-tasting sweets!
After a much better sleep, we got our first Perth bus into town yesterday. Even getting ourselves a smartride card so we can now travel all over, whenever, since we have basically mastered the system!!! We were really happy to see some familiar shops and to be in a different, busier environment. We spent a lot of time at the tourist information centre and made ourself a new friend (!) We sorted out new SIM cards (it was so much easier than we expect) and enquired about internet for the laptop, the guy was really helpful and we know the plan we are getting now. We spent so much time yesterday asking people questions!! We also got some necessities like lunch, hairspray and shorts!
Our favourite thing of the day (lame) was finding the bigger supermarket 'woolworths.' Let us justify this: there were sooo many cheaper things and bits we recognised from home. We won't be spending as much on food now and they even have our moisturisers etc so we are chuffed! After this, we waited for our bus and got approached by a very drunken man, pretty scary to begin with, asking us for money for a bus. Since we had ages to wait we went back into the centre of town and unfortunately we crossed paths again. So made a quick dash.
We got home and made jacket potatoes for dinner (fairly more successfully than our last meal!) We watched Liar Liar, uploaded our pics onto the laptop, enjoyed tasty sweets, watched friends and read, befopre getting a good night's sleep.
Today we nearly missed the bus into town, a bit of a rushed morning, we made our way to this internet cafe and will be taking our packed lunch and travel books, diaries and postcards to King's park when the bus comes at 2:18.
Will hopefully be online again soon, thinking of you all. Having a great time, lots of love,
Amy and Mary-Ann
