Arrived after a 26 hour bus journey to El Calafate! Patagonia already had been like nothing else we had seen in our travels to date. Upon arriving in El Calafate that theme continued. Found in the Parque De Los Glaciares, El Calafate is an alpine town on the waters of Lago Argentina (a huge glacial melt lake). Quite a commercially developed town which gives great access to Perrito Moreno 'little brown dog', one of the worlds most active glaciers.
We booked a trip for the day after our arrival to visit this glacier. The trip included a panoramic walk which showed front on views of the glacier, quite exciting sitting and watching the glaciers break off in huges chunks. The second part was a boat trip that took us close up to the front of the glacier, once again offering views of chunks breaking off. The third and final part to the trip and most definitely the most exciting was to don some crampons and walk on the glacier itself. Great fun and finished with a Whiskey and ice, fresh from the glacier itself. Not sure which has more of an impact the crowds of boozers or global warming !!
