This morning we woke up naturally, and mounted a bus with a 'short eat' bag of breakfast. A Sri Lankan toddler kept Jo entertained as far as Dambulla where we got off. Dambulla is famous for its cave temples which has loads of Buddha statues and other effigies in dimly lit caves. Pretty cool and after 30 minutes we'd seen it, so back to the bus and on to Kandy...
Arriving in Kandy the tuktuk driver told us about Kandian Dances that night. 'I'll pick you up at 5?' he offered in the hope of another fare. He was a nice bloke so we agreed and saw him later for the dance show and fire walking. It was pretty amateurish and touristy, but for a few quid it filled an hour or so. After, we got our first, but far from last taste of kotthu roti, best food in SL!
The next day we called the same driver and haggled over the phone about the price of a day tour around Kandy. Agreed on £6.50 and we'll see him in half an hour. His 'brother' turned up...Jaminda was also a nice fella so we knocked the price down to £6.00 and off we went. Seven hours later and we'd seen all that Kandy had to offer, at least all the ethical stuff. Tea plantationed, spice gardened (including a few free massages in a bid to get us to buy massage oils), botanical gardened, Buddha templed and tea factoried out we got back to Kandy centre and headed to main street market for souvenir shopping.
More kotthu roti for dinner?
Next stop Adams Peak...
