Arriving in Tangalla, we met a Sri Lankan 3 wheel driver who was more reggae than Buddhist. His dreadlocks whistled in the wind as he whipped us to the beach for a room with a sea view.
With it being the monsoon season in SW Sri Lanka, there's only one reason to be in Tangalla at this time of year and that's to visit the turtles in nesting season. With an afternoon to kill we drank beers by the beach and skyped Rach on her birthday.
As dusk began to fall, we jumped into a tuktuk and made our way to Rekawa beach. This is a protected beach with a limited tourist entrance and is patrolled day and night to keep the turtles eggs safe from poachers. In our little guided group we huddled around the two red torch lights and walked with excitement towards a nesting female. Having just laid her 120 eggs she was now proceeding to cover them up. Luckily her and pal were working together to provide all night entertainment and her friend was just starting to lay. 120 eggs later she too covered them and we watched her drag her enormous shelled body back to the sea for a recuperation coral feast. A very special and surreal memory already.
The next day, more buses to get ourselves to Galle, a very European fort city.
