One step closer to the end of our NZ trip and our favourite town of the south island. To get to Omaru (2 hours) we had a few stop offs to get some fresh air. On walking onto one of the beaches shortly after sunrise it was clear to see the 'attraction' with the crowd of 40 people milling around. We made our way down to the throng to visit the Maoraki boulders being gently lapped by the sea. Nice and round if that's what you're into. Collected our obligatory pictures, danced around on them for a while, watched people do handstands on them (why was I never that elegant) and finished the remainder of our trip to Omaru, just in time for lunch!
Fush and Chups!!!!!!! It had been a long 2 week wait but so good. Actually they were pretty average but memories are often better than the event. We spent the whole meal in the harbour talking about the price of chips! $10 for two fish, two chips and two litres of coke... Bloody bargain! £2.50 per person. They don't do it like that in England any more.
Before our 4pm rendezvous with the penguins we went for a look around the old town, very Edinburghesque and we loved it. Our wander was soon halted when we found a shop offering gifts and beads, browsing the gifts we discovered the beads. So I spent the next hour and a half making jewellery with our Bryn, who was chief bead chooser!
We jumped into the van and headed up to yellow-eyed-penguin beach, after spotting several couples waddling up the beach after a busy days fishing we left satisfied. Straight back to the harbour for the arrival of the little blue penguins, and just in time. We watched with batted breathe as one narrowly avoid traffic on the way back to it's nest to feed the chicks.
To finish off the day; a trip to Scotts micro brewery for a few schooner's and a 2 litre rigger to take home to the van.
How did I almost forget... We got a massive clothes wash done today! A travelling highlight again. Especially as the load was dried in the kiwi sun. Degriming in the showers was also a welcome treat.
