Lake tekapo, should we go? The weather said no. Cloudy skies don't make for great sunsets and stars, and as we were going for the dark sky reserve we ummed and arred...

Jo's nagging paid off and we decided to risk it. Well thanks babe!! Best views of the trip. A steep hike up Mount John brought us to the observatory which has a panorama of the cook range, snow peaked rugged mountains straight out of middle earth. Hot chocolate and chai latte in hand we watched the sky turn from blue to green, through to yellow, red and orange and a few colours in between. It was just beautiful.

A night time walk back down the icy track and we knocked up a fried breakfast/dinner at the camp. The Asians were very interested.

That night we lay by the lake and looked up at the best stars of my life. Billions of stars littered the sky, punctuated by a halo across the middle which was the incredible milky way. So cool!

The next day we saw a church and skimmed stones on the lake.
