The road to Wayanad was a far cry from the dusty roads of lowland India. In the western ghats, hairpin bends are flanked by luscious forests filled with cheeky monkeys. Every break in the tree line gives views of the land falling away for miles and miles. Award for best bus ride in Asia goes to...And all for 19p :)
Arriving in Sulthan Batteri was like arriving at a hangover after a night of merriment, chaos in the country side. But we found a quiet hotel with clean sheets and had a peaceful night in front of the tablet.
The next day was Wayanad national park. Lonely planet quote 'your very best chance to spot wild elephants in India'. Excited we were! After taking a rain check on the 6am alarm we took the bus out to the park entrance in the afternoon. Jeeped up with a couple of Aussies we headed through the forest. The ellies weren't playing out today. Sadly for us, not much else was either, but we did see a shed load of spotted deer, giant Indian squirrels, rhesus monkeys and what we think was a serpent eagle.
Thoroughly disappointed, but happy that we'd tried, we boarded the bus to Mysore for a breezy evening ride through the country.
