Ol n' Ben around the world
Hard to go back to sleep at 6am after the deadly 4 to 6 shift ! But surprisingly, I sleep quite well until 10. The weather is still sunny.
We have breakfast, pack our stuff and get ready to paddle towards Coraholmen island.
O. and I are still in the K2R and A. remains in the K1 for today.
Coraholmen Island is only 4 km away from the campsite and we reach it in only 45 minutes.
We change clothes so that we can have a walk and discover the island.
The topography of Coraholmen island is very surprising. The west part is hilly moraine, with many steep reddish mounds connecting gorgeous tiny lakes. The landscape reflection is just amazing.
On the east part of the island, we leave the hilly moraine to discover flat and verdant toundra, leading to beautiful beaches made of pink and grey coral and stones, facing the organ-like mountain... What an amazing scenery !
We walk back to the kayaks and have lunch there on the beach. We board the kayaks at 5:30 pm, and paddle southward towards Kapp Waern, 13 km away. We paddle along the coast. The sea is very calm and we can see several bernacle geese.
We reach the cape at 8pm. Amazing light. Glassy sea merging with the sky... The island facing the cape seems to float in the air...
As everybody seems fine and feeling painless, the guide decides to take advantage of those good conditions and to cross d*** onfjord bay to reach the other side. Everybody gets extra chocolate bars, and here we go !
d*** onfjord, where strong currents are usually found, is like a mirror lake, and the 6.5 km crossing is made effortlessly in one hour !
We reach the shore close to Harald's cabin, the oldest trapper in Svalbard who's been living here for more than 30 years !
We sit and have hot beverages, then stretch for 20 minutes. We set the camp on a beach filled with driftwood. Once the tents are settled, we fetch wood in order to make fire on the beach.
While preparing food near the fire, R. cuts himself with a knife, quite deeply... The guide takes care of him and calls for medical advice with the satellite phone. Everybody is worried as we are far from any hospital and the wound may worsen. Thus the guide decides that the next day will be off : everybody will rest, and we will see how the wound goes.
While having dinner, the temperature drops to -1°C ! There is frost on the tents... We go quickly to bed with warm clothes, as the light starts to dim...
