Day 357, 26 June 2013, Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay. A UNESCO listed world heritage site - the old town or barrio historical is the reason we thought a couple of days in Colonia could be fun. We had a leisurely morning at the hotel before heading to the Buquebus terminal for the ferry. Luckily we had some time to hand as the 10 minute taxi ride ended up taking almost 30 in heavy traffic. The ferry was huge and took just on an hour to cross the Rio del Plata (or River of Silver). It is so wide at this point it truly felt we were crossing an ocean - albeit a very flat one). There is nothing big about old Colonia - we walked from the ferry terminal to the inn Posada Las Quintas (there is most definitely a Trip Advisor coming up on that subject). After dropping our frightfully small shoulder bags we strolled the main street, Gral Flores and headed into the historic area - built in the 1600s by the Portuguese and with the same cobbled streets even now, it was very quaint indeed. Many vintage cars are parked in this neighbourhood (some including the one pictured obviously just for decoration). We think of Colonia as essentially a chess piece - it was snatched back and forth between Portugal and Spain for centuries, Brazil had a pop and now it's part of the independent country of Uruguay. Quite a turbulent history for such a tiny place - just strategically very important. We hunted dinner eventually after playing the dance of the dozen ATMs (and eventually giving up). A bottle of wine from a supermarket, some quiche and salad from a bakery and each other - C'est parfait and good night.
