After leaving the glaciers we drove to a town called Te Anau. This was only a small town and a good stopover point for organising tours to either Doubtful or Milford Sound. After much deliberation we decided on Milford Sound and booked a boat trip for the following day. Whilst in Te Anau we did however manage to find a magnificent pie shop. They were so good that we had to go there twice, once on the way to Milford Sound and once on the way back. Unfortunately we also saw England get humilated by the Aussies in the 2nd Test, not good especially as we knew we would be going to Australia in a matter of days!
The next morning we got up early to drive to Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park. The drive was very scenic, we stopped at the mirror lakes to get a picture of the reflecting landscapes as well as travelling through the Homer tunnel, which was very steep and bumpy, quite scary!
Milford Sound is a fiord that was carved by a massive glacier in the last ice age. It is surrounded by huge mountains and particularly famous for its rounded peaks. The Sound is also said to have the 2nd highest levels of rainful in the world, about 7 metres of rain each year.
When we arrived we boarded our boat and were able to travel all the way through Milford Sound. It's easy to see why Rudyard Kipling described this place as the Eighth Natural Wonder of the World. The excess rainfall actually added to the scenery as it created many cascading waterfalls that were crossed with rainbows, all very beautiful!
After about an hour and a half on the blustery boat we headed back to Milford Sound harbour and drove back to Te Anau for one last pie.
Next stop Invercargill
