After leaving Kaikoura we took Arthur's Pass, the scenic route across the South Island of New Zealand, taking us from the East Coast to the West. Unfortunately the weather was awful, so the spectacular scenery we expected was hidden behind clouds and mist, but to be honest the whole of New Zealand's scenery is so spectacular anyway that you get a bit 'scenery'd' out.
We drove on to Greymouth on the west coast, where we watched the sunset over the Tasman Sea whilst drinking a bottle of Cloudy Bay.
The next day we drove up the coast (another scenic drive which apparently has been voted in the top 10 coastal drives in the world by Lonely Planet) to the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, some rock formations in the shape of pancakes (funnily enough).
Next stop.....glacier hiking at the Franz Josef Glacier.
