Rich & Alli's Travels
After Yosemite we moved onto another National Park, this time Death Valley. We were heading to Sequoia NP first, but we didn't realise there was no road linking the two parks, and would have added about a day to our journey so we decided we'd seen enough trees for now.
We arrived in Death Valley quite late, as we'd driven around Fresno (where we stayed the night before) for about three hours looking for an internet cafe. The reason we haven't updated the site for so long is because finding an internet cafe in the US is like looking for a meal with a vegetable in (excluding tomato, onion and lettuce you get in your burgers!)! Fresno has about 100k people yet only one internet cafe, and we estimate Western America only has about three!
Anyway, we stumbled across Death Valley at about 5pm. (As expected there were no signs telling us where we were or how far the next town was.) We decided to try to get around it in an evening, thinking it may be a bit cooler. Wrong! It was still about 105 degrees Fahrenheit at 9pm! We saw a few of the sights before we decided to stay in the park, as it was getting dark and we had no idea how far the next town was. Luckily we got the last room in the park and after a quick pizza settled down to watch a bit of TV, only to find Mark Webster of SSgA fame strutting his stuff on Bloomberg TV. Very bizarre we can't escape SSgA even in the middle of the desert! And before anyone asks what we were doing watching Bloomberg TV, we were just channel hopping! Honest!
Next morning we headed out to see the last few sights, which included climbing a mile up a volcano in 100 degree heat and climbing to a viewpoint over the whole park, where we got some great photos. We left around lunch as we panicked the car may overheat and we would die.....the bright lights of Vegas were calling!
