Well, today (Sun 23rd) was more productive and much more active than yesterday! Had a lovely day though :-) The first thing I did was go on the second cable car in the town which is called the 'la garrucha' which is not a modern cable car- it is almost a big brightly coloured wooden box with a door on each side and 2 little benches in it! It takes you up to the opposite side of the town and once again you get great views of the town, and it was a bargain at 3,000 pesos return! (£1) The little café at the top is not as quiet and peaceful as the other one, however as I went off for a little wander the music faded and it was very tranquil, with lovely views of the hills with little houses dotted around, very pretty.
When I got back down to the town at around midday I decide to go for a walk and thought I'd head in the direction of a trout farm which didn't seem to far from town, accordingto the map the hotel owner had drawn me…. it turned out to be an hour and a half walk in hot sunshine and as I hadn't expected a long walk I had no water with me :-( I was baking and it was mostly walking uphill! As most of you know my fitness levels are not great so I found it quite hard whereas a fit person would consider it easy I'm sure! I should add though that the walk was worth it as the scenery was lovely, luckily! At one point I could either go right or left and I opted for right....yes, right was indeed the wrong way but there was no one to ask and no sign either! Eventually I saw some people in a house so I asked them and they redirected me, of course I should have gone left! So I headed back up that hill, passing a man who I had passed earlier walking up near the top of the cable car stop. That combined with the view of the church from where I was up in the hills led me to believe I had actually walked to not far from where I'd been earlier that day! If only I'd known I could have started from up there and avoided all the uphill walking! A man on a motorbike stopped as I was making my way up the hill I had just walked down in the wrong direction and asked me where I was going then said he'd give me a lift. I have never been on any kind of motorbike and didn't really ever plan to but I was so hot and tired I accepted the offer. He drove slowly up the hill and all was fine but the little bit of going downhill was a bit scary, from the point of view of someone who has never been on a motorbike! Anyway he dropped me where the road had forked and said I wouldn't be able to get lost from there! I did indeed find 'la trucheria ARKA' and the owner told me I'd just walked 5km. After a couple of cool drinks (non-alcoholic of course) I felt a bit better. I wasn't hungry enough to have a full lunch so I just had patacones with hogao sauce (tomato and onions). Whilst eating I noticed a family who had been in the bakery where I'd had my breakfast (a selection of 3 different cheese breads) and then realised they had passed me quite early on in my walk. I asked them if they might be able to give me a lift back to town, luckily they were as friendly as all the other Colombians I've met and they said no problem! Although the walk back would have been easier I was so relieved and grateful!
On return to the town I sat in the square and read my book and people watched. There were even more people around than on Saturday and lots of horses around too, I saw about 6 or 7 lined up with the owners probably sat in one of the cafes! I had dinner at a different restaurant, but it was a similar typical Colombian meal- chicken with beans, rice and plantain. People continued to trot in and out of town on their horses in the evening. I really enjoyed visiting the town of Jardin- it has a really nice feel to it and a good atmosphere as well as being a pretty and not touristy town.
