After enduring a huge temperature change going from an over 30 degree day to about 17 degrees, we stopped at Alligator Gorge in quite miserable weather. We did a self-guided 4wd tour today at Willow Springs called Skytrek. It took us 5 hours to do the 80km loop on the 70 000 acre sheep station. The first half was nice enough but the value came from when we eventually reached the ridgetop climb and had fantastic views over the Flinders Ranges. We set the alarm to get up early to start the Wilpena Pound walk to try and beat the heat. The benefit of this was all the animals were also active. So when we drove through the Morlana Scenic Drive, we saw so many sheep, kangaroos, emus and rabbits which weren't there on the drive back through in thew afternoon. On our way back to the highway we took the scenic road which followed the coast closely and was really nice. It lead us to Point Lowly where we took a walk around the lighthouse. Driving on, I expected to like Port Augusta more but not many people had nice things to say about the area. We stopped at Tumby Bay, Cowell (the locals were really friendly here) and Whyalla heading north. We did plan on fishing, as the area has a really good reputation for it, but it is too windy to enjoy. We also wanted to snorkel to see giant cuttle fish and leafy seadrogons but the water is too cold without a wetsuit and mild weather. We drove to camp about 30min north of Whyalla at Fitzgerald Bay. It was really windy here but a nice spot to look at.
