We enjoyed a lovely walk down old Athens, it was great people watching, children kicking a ball around, lovers holding hands whilst strolling along, old men deep in conversation enjoying a beer and smoke. Lots of out side eateries to choose from, I had a lamb sausage open souvalaki thing it was ok, Boof had carbonarra which he loved. Our garlic bread was that loaded up with garlic that it burnt our mouths whilst eating it lol! Can still taste it today.
The buffet breakfast was yum, Boof especially liked the bread rolls, it was a bit hard to get in and get what you wanted though, will have to get there early tomorrow to beat the crowd. We have a lot of different nationaliaties on tour, we have especially clicked with the other ausies from Tully and Brisbane and also a pom, Stev and his dad. Steve reminds me a bit of popeie lol! We have a fair few elderly people so the walking part of our tour will be quit slow but hopefully that just makes us take more of it in.
Today we were up at 6am to head to the Acropolis. It was amazing!! We saw the three temples, the first being the temple of Nike it's 420BC, the second is the Parthenon named after the Greek goddess of Athena who is the goddess of wisdom born from the head of Zeus that was struck with an axe. Athens is named after Athena. The third temple is Poseidon 420BC it has six beautiful carved out maidens called caryatids. It only cost 12 euro to get in and the tickets are used for many of the sights we will be seeing. All the temples are made from marble. Also at the acropolis is an open air theater where they still preform today.
On our tour around Athens we saw many monuments like a man made from green glass, parliament buildings, beautiful old churches and the Olympic stadium where the special olypics are being held this June/July.
We are traveling north now to the town of kalambaka to see monastery's . The country side along the way has been very hilly, fairly dry with lots of man made lakes and olive trees. Greeks national drink is ouzo, so will have to give that a try. Have already tried a few beers and wine, all very nice lol!!
Greeks don't celebrate birthdays they celebrate name days which are given to them at birth from there grandparents and that name will be the name of a saint, so every year when it's the saints birthday they celebrate there name day.
Along the road are these miniature church like things, I thought they where letter boxes but they are not. They are to mark the sight a a fatal accident, the families of loved ones build them, they put a picture inside of the person who has died along with a lantin at which the families keep alight and some times a personal possession of that person.
