Last night we had a lovely evening out, strolling along the walk ways mingling with our new friends, Steve,Len (UK) Terissa (new Zealand) and Bob and Sally (UK). It was so nice to find out what each ones interests and work was and learning about each others countries.
Today we have been up in the cliffs to visit a monastery and a nunery. in both they all wore black and didn't really speak to anyone. The monastery's were built in the 14 th century, they are Greek orthodox. There used to be over 20 but now there is only six, due a lot to war. There was one that you could see it had it's roof repaired after a Nazi bomb had gone through it. The first monastery that we visited was Varlaam, we walked up over 100 stairs to get there but it was well worth it, the view was spectacular!! All the women had to wear dresses or a skirt and the males had to wear pants and no one could have there shoulders showing. In the chapel you could not take any photos or video as to preserve all the art work. As you walk in it is very dark with incense burning with Greek whims playing, it's quiet daunting. From head to toe there was paintings all over the walls and roof, they were very graphic images of people getting there feet cut off, being beheaded and tortured. Along with a lot of crosses, the virgin Mary and Christ.
These monastery's and nuneries are all built at the top off these cliff faces as to be closer to god, to be on there own so they can dedicate there lives to worship. It's hard to get your head around but you can appreciate the great lengths they have gone to, to build such places and devote there lives to such a higher power, in there eyes ( god).
The Nunery that we visited was St Barbra, it had a women's touch all the way through it with fresh flowers and a more homely feel. It was a lot smaller than the monastery, but had this very cute bell tower that made a great picture ( I hope lol!)
We stopped at a couple more just to take photo's off, we even got a lovely group shot. We went back to kalambasts for lunch where we were greated with a small glass of traditional sweet dessert wine witch tasted a bit like port or sherry but not as strong. For lunch I had a delicatsie for that area of Grease , cooked feta which was sort of marinated in olive oil on a bed of onion and tomatoes, along with a stuffed egg plant and for dessert we had a traditional cake. It was all very nice.
Something else we have learnt about Grease is there is always a lot of elderly men in these cafes all over Grease. It's because they retire and the women want them out of the house lol! A typical day for a retired man would be to wake up then go to his local cafe for his first cup of Turkish style coffee, he would stay there a while talking with his friends and maybe have an ouzo on ice then go home where his wife will fix him lunch and then put him to bed for a siesta. He would then wake and go back to his local cafe for a coffee, a wisky and a gossip with his friends. Man what a life, that sounds great, I think Boof wants to retire here lol!
We have driven to Delfi this afternoon it is just stunning! It is right up in the cliffs, the town has only three streets, an upper, middle and lower and each street is so narrow that only one car at a time. We watched a cooking demonstration of a traditional spinach and feta pie, she made it look so easy rolling out the pastry but I think it there is quiet a technique to it. We then enjoyed a meal at the same Restaurant with our friends.
