In Greek mythology, Delphi was the site of the Delphic oracle, the most important oracle in the classical Greek world, and a major site for the worship of the god Apollo after he slew the Python, a deity who lived there and protected the navel of the Earth. The navel of the earth came from Zeus throwing up two eagles at the opposite ends of the earth and the navel is where they met. Python (derived from the verb pythein, "to rot") is claimed by some to be the original name of the site in recognition of the Python that Apollo defeated.[2]
In the inner hestia ("hearth") of the Temple of Apollo, an eternal flame burned. After the battle of Plataea, the Greek cities extinguished their fires and brought new fire from the hearth of Greece, at Delphi; in the foundation stories of several Greek colonies, the founding colonists were first dedicated at Delphi.[6]
Dating back to 1400 BC, the Oracle of Delphi was the most important shrine in all Greece, and in theory all Greeks respected its independence. Built around a sacred spring, Delphi was considered to be the omphalos - the center (literally navel) of the world.
People came from all over Greece and beyond to have their questions about the future answered by the Pythia, the priestess of Apollo. And her answers, usually cryptic, could determine the course of everything from when a farmer planted his seedlings, to when an empire declared war.
To stand at such a holly, ancient site was very humbling and quiet ceriel. Not to mention the view took your breath away.
It is about 35 degrees today, quiet hot for a lot of people but just perfect for us. Our cosmos group is really mingling and getting on very well. We are having such a ball, feeling very lucky to be able to do this.
For lunch we stopped at a sea side town and enjoyed some squid, it was nice but still doesn't compare to Gaz's squid in kulumbaru Wa. The water was so clear and had a real aqua colour to it. Boof found a sea erchin, it was so spiky it would really hurt if you stepped on one.
We crossed a famous bridge here in Grease called Rion-Antirion it joins the two towns Rion and Antirion. It is nearly 3 km long.
