We travelled by bus from Nairobi to Kakuma, which was the craziest bus trip i think i have ever done!! The first leg was from Nairobi to Kitale in Western Kenya!! This was fine as there was a road!! However the second bus trip took about 14hrs on dirt which was hell!! It was so so hot up there and the people that were getting on the bus mostly were people from the Turkana tribe!! They dont really wear clothes just robes and they all carry guns!! Which was fun when they sat behind us with loaded guns and the bus was bouncing all ver the road!! Turkana people say themselves that they dont actually live in Kenya but when they travel down to the town of Kitale thats when they are going back to Kenya!! Thats how remote this area is!! Its so dry and has'nt rained in ages!! To make things worrse the rest of the people that got on the bus were sudanese and somalis from the refugee camp!! This were the most hostile people as arguments between them would go on for hours and hours!! After a terrible trip we got to the UN Camp really late and just passed out until morning!! The next day we got a friend who escorted us into the UN Camp which had the tightest security and was even hard for employees to get in!! We tried t discuss projects with the guys there for vounteers as we had been told there would be no problem, only for the guy to tell us they dont take volunteers!!! So we went out of the camp to a local school where they arranged to take our companies volunteers!! By this point it was probarly abot 40 degrees so we just hid in the shade and drank coke!!! Later on me & John got lift with a UN vehicle going into the Refugee Camp so we decided to tag along!! They then dropped us in the middle of the camp in the Sudanese area and told us to take bikes or 'Bodo Bodo's' back to the entrance which was a pretty crazy experience, and at times have never felt so scared in my life!!!! We called it a day up in the desert and took the crazy bus trip back to Nairobi whiich was even worse as the driver was driving so fast so when you tried to sleep you literally went flying across the bus!! I had many bruises to prove it!! Ohhhh forgot to mention on the way to Kakuma the bus broke the springs on the back wheel and we had to wait for an hour in the desert before they put sticks in there and somehow it stayed!! We finally got back to Nairobi about 3 years later, battered, bruised and very very dirty!!, i was actually black!!! NEVER AGAIN!!
