Decided to go up into the moutains of Chiang Mai today to see the Doi Suthep temple. We waved a songthaew down outside our hostel (basically a pick up truck with a roof and benches down the sides of the back as seats) - Nick baterred with the driver & they eventually agreed on 400 Baht for a return for the pair of us. About half way up the mountain the driver pulled over at a viewpoint where we could look back down over the city. We then continued up the rest of the mountain to the temple. We each paid 50 Baht to get in & took a very steep elevator up to the very top of the mountain where the temple is. You can walk the last bit but it is very steep and it had been raining, with the steps being tiled it was quite slippery so chose to take the lift (or maybe that is just an excuse for us being lazy!!).
Unfortunately the Pagoda had scaffolding around it but the Buddha's were beautiful, especially the stone one! Being so high it was really cloudy so we didn't really get any views back down on the city which was a shame, but we did get to see some Thai dancing which was cool.
We made our way back down to the city, great fun on those hills in the back of a songthaew!! Walking back to our hostel we chatted to a man who is a teacher at the local school (it was Nick's Superman T-Shirt that got us noticed again!!), he was a nice man, very interesting to speak to. Had some linch & tried to book our hotel for Phi Phi as not long till we get there now!!
Later, when having dinner, Nick saw some people waving at us through the window, I thought he was crazy waving back as who would it be, then I realised it was the Spanish couple that were on the Kanchanaburi tour with us!!! How odd is that bumping into them again, all the way up in Chiang Mai!! They were a nice couple, everyone else on the tour was a bit odd, especially the Russian couple!!
After dinner we made our way to the Night Bazaar, a huge market, both outside and in a mall type area. Our first purchase was some Thai Silks, we bought3 for 500 Baht. We each then bought a silk cushion cover (300 Baht for two) for our Mums & Nick got a pair of Thai Boxing shorts for Matt & a Buddha statue for Cally - battering for each of course, Nick is a pro now! After walking around the entire thing we made our way back, seeing a few cockroaches on route!!!!
