A very busy day today. We drove south through the Catlins. First stop was to a lighthouse at Nugget Point. As we walked up there the fog got worse and worse making it hard to see but we did see a few fur seals playing in amongst the rocks.
As we drive back down the hill the fog cleared slightly and we went to a beach that is known to have sea lions bathing in the sand. When the bus pulled up he had to slam on his breaks as a female sea lion had managed to get all the way to the car park for a snooze! She was beautiful, quite a few battle scars though!
We walked quite a way on the beach and eventually found 2 male sea lions asleep on the sand, they were HUGE! Our driver said they were around 300KG! Nick and a few others from the bus walked through the grass land off the beach to another beach where they saw another 3 males, 1 of which charged at someone who got a bit close whilst another started roaring and ran a bit! Scary!
Next stop was to McLean Falls. We walked through rainforest to get the waterfull - it was stunning. Once we'd all walked back from the falls we went for lunch, some at the pub and others, like us, picnic'd.
After lunch we went to Curio Bay, spent sometime at the beach before going to another area to see the New Zealand Yellow Eye Penguins. It was great seeing them in their home environment, they were adorable, one couple kissing and sleeping heads against each other! We were shocked to see one jumping up the rocks too, they jump so high! Cutie.
After a really long day and being biten to death by sand flies we eventually got to our hostel, Tuatara, in Invercargill. After some soup we chilled out in the TV room with the lads from our bus and watched some films before bed.
