So after Billy had said his ceremonious farewell to his last cigarette (nearly missing our flight might I add!) we boarded the plane and made ourselves comfy for the next 4 & a half hours. We got chatting to the girl sat by the window, Konnie, who was from Germany.... and we couldn't have had better seats because she was booked into the same hostel as us! As was the girl sat to my left, Jane, who was from Brighton.. Couldn't have been a better coincidence. We got chatting & before we knew it we were touching down in ozzy land!!! Passing through border control/immigration was pretty funny as it seemed that our officer instantly knew where we were from.... referring to Billy as a pirate which I found ever so amusing!! Hahaha.
As soon as we set foot outside of the airport we were reminded of England due to the heavy downpour of rain..... but that didn't seem to bother us because of how hot it already appeared to be at 6 in the morning! Grabbing a taxi with Konnie we headed to our hostel, but weren't able to check into our dorm for another few hours. Breakfast time!! We'd waited 3 months for a bacon sandwich, and boy was it worth the wait - the cost of it not so much though!! Safe to say it was a culture shock coming from Asia, where you could eat on the street for £1...
Once we'd moved our stuff into our dorm we caught some zzzzz as nobody else was around, then went to explore the tiny town of Darwin, and when I say tiny, I mean all of 4 streets! Although it was very small, it still had a nice feel to it as everything was within walking distance, and the esplanade ran alongside. We'd been told Darwin was crocodile central, and because of this the sea was a no go area, unless you wanted to get eaten alive of course! After sorting out our Australian number for my phone, we decided to sit on the esplanade, trying (and failing) to spot some crocodiles, until we got caught in one massive storm that came out of nowhere! Darwin was definitely in it's wet season.
We had the 'pleasure' of meeting our roommates later - 2 German idiots that clearly loved their drink a little bit too much! There was also a lovely little Taiwan lad in with us too, who proceeded to be spun round and around without warning by one of the Germans.... rather him than me! Something good did come from sharing a room with those guys - Billy got given his first guitar, for free!! Funnily enough he'd been wanting to learn for a while, and this guy was trying to get rid of it as he didn't want to lug it around, so it worked out for everyone. Thankfully we were planning on getting ourselves a campervan, so it wasn't going to be a pain in the ass for us.
When we'd met Jane on our way out to Oz, she'd mentioned she was working at Backpackers World Travel in the centre of Darwin (not hard to find) so with wanting to get on the road and make our way across the country to Cairns, we thought we'd pop in and get our Australian adventure well on its way.
This is where we met Charlie and Kate, who are British but loving life down under, and both work in the shop. We got chatting with them for ages and had a good laugh, they gave us loads of helpful advice, and Charlie was a star - sorting us out some transport (and our home for the next few days) for our road trip, in the form of a Wicked hatchback with a mattress in the back! Although there were loads of camper rentals all over Australia, we'd worked it out to be cheaper to buy one. But considering we wanted to move on from Darwin pretty quickly, it was gonna be impossible to purchase one in such a short space of time! Still pretty impressed with our rental car though, we went and did our very first Australian food shop (EXPENSIVE AHH!), then went for a Thai meal.. funny how we'd had enough of Asia, yet 3 days later we fancied some of their food again!? We attempted to get some sleep on our final night in the dorm, before setting off early the next morning for our 3000km road trip across the Outback! Happy days.
