Why isn't tallness a recognised disability?
Day 5 saw 2 new boys arrive into our dorm. Nicola christened them 'smelly boys' from the off. Im not sure if this was 'good smell' or 'bad smell' because when I met them they were getting ready to hit the town (i say town, I mean one street, one bar) and it was aftershave city so this probably isn't 'bad smell'. However, one of them had a flatulence problem in their sleep which definitely constitutes 'bad smell'. Either way Nicola's assumption was right, they were 'smelly boys'.
Also rather disturbingly one of them seemed to have a cowboy fetish, this led me to think that maybe they are the real life people from Brokeback Mountain and they are escaping prejudices in their home town by fleeing to the Bay Of Islands where everyone is accepted without question.
The hostel had the cutest little dog, ive no idea what make it was but he was great and I was tempted to steal him but alas that would have been cruel on the dog as their is already one dominant b1tch in the car. Thats a pun I simply couldn't resist, its not true, she's not dominant.
We headed back to Auckland for the afternoon as I hadn't had a chance to see it yet. It was very kind of Nicola to factor this into the schedule seeing as I was a donut at the beginning and got my arrival dates wrong. I did geniously decide that Auckland should be re-named ORCland and this became the 'in joke' for the day as we continually gave it some chuckling mileage. Or should that be Km's?
After ORCland we headed to Cathedral Cove Lodge backpackers for the night. Worse lodge ever, very cold with restrictive bed size and the kitchen was an absolute sh1t tip. Nicola enjoyed it I think because she took quite a shine to the man at reception.
Day 6 began well because it meant we left that lodge behind. I decided on shorts even though it was cold. It was a wacky choice that paid dividends until around 5pm when my little legs were to get cold. We walked down to Cathedral Cove, it was a good little walk down and the views from the Cove were stunning. It also gave me time to master saying 'Cove' in a geordie accent.
On the next part of the road trip we passed through a town called Te Awamutu. Te Awamutu was a big deal for me as its the birthplace of the Finn Brothers and subsequently Crowded House. Just by seeing the sign I felt a certain glow by passing through the home town of the band that fuelled my love for melody led harmony laden guitar fuelled rock.
Onto Waitomo Caves for the night and a nice hostel. The receptionist referred to Nicola as 'my partner'. I don't think Nicola heard this as she didn't immediately throw up.
