If I had to describe today in one word it would be: wine! We started the day watching Scooby doo in Italian (aka Scoobio) and went to the supermarket for some food! After buying some brunch (chocolate salami- a bit like tiffin, no meat involved!) we got the waterbus to Venice.
We got off the water bus just after the Rialto bridge and wondered the streets of venice. Venice is literally like a maze, full off dead ends or streets with a canal at the end! I was wondering how anyone gets post here! Apparently (I read in the guide book) that the postal system devised a numbering system where each house has a different number, they don't have street names! So a map (especially to me!) is completely useless!
We had heard of these shops where you can take in an empty bottle and they will fill it with wine dead cheap. We didn't really believe it but kept an eye out for one. Shaun was just saying that we would have to google it and we turned a corner... only to find one! The shop had a sign outside saying 1 litre of chardonnay on tap was €2.60! We went in, still a bit dubious and this guy produced an empty 1.5l water bottle and asked us which wine we would like! We filled it full of pinot grigio for €3.90! We then sat on a bridge for ages (I couldn't tell you how long actually!) and drank our wine- yes laugh all you like! The rest of the afternoon was a bit of a blur but apparently we made numerous stops in cafes for toilet visits! Shaun was completely sober but after little breakfast and no lunch, the wine wasn't a good idea for me!
Feeling a little sick I remember sitting on another bridge drinking fanta to make me feel better! We wondered around a bit more of Venice, constantly getting lost and having to go back the wat we turned!
We came back to the island we're staying on, Lido for tea because its much cheaper than Venice itself! We went to this Thai restaurant to have a massive italian meal! I had gnocchi in a cheese sauce then a massive steak with chips!
Feeling very full we got back on the water boat to Venice and went back to a gift shop we found on the Rialto bridge. Another thing about Venice is that there are no roads- just canals, which is obvious but its strange when your here. We heard a siren before and saw a speedboat zoom down the river that was a fire engine! That was strange! Then again, Venice is a strange place!
The past week has been really busy for us travelling from place to place- 5 cities in the past 7 days! I'm glad we're chilling in the last few days in Venice, and have no more train journeys to make! Just a plane to catch home! Tomorrow is our last full day in Italy and we plan to make the most of it!
Night night! xx
