Without much sleep we quickly rented a car with quality air-conditioning and a working stereo, despite only the front right speaker working, packed the eski with food and started our adventure to Chania. As we were driving to Chania, Michael yelling at the other drivers and me trying to read the map and travel book for historical sites, we decided to stop at the city of Rethymnon and visit the Fortezza. Walking around the fort we both looked at each other and said, "another wall surrounding a mosque and thousands of years of rocks." We quickly walked back to the car and continued to our next destination, the Suda Bay War Cemetery. Our next stop was the Monastery of Gouverneto, only to discover that it was closed for 2 hours. So there we were again thinking we wasted our time driving to another monastery. We started walking around the gate to find another trail leading to another monastery, Katholiko. The monastery was built into the vertical walls of the cliff with a stone bridge that served as the courtyard. A unique place an well worth the hike unless it's the middle of the day, no trees, flip flops, and 30 degrees celsius (86F). By the time we arrived back to the car we were both hot and sweaty animals. After a quick sandwich, and 3 liters of bottled water later we were on the road again. We both agreed that was enough walking for the day and couldn't live another moment without air-conditioning. Minutes later we finally arrived in Chania. After driving around in circles trying to find a street sign and read the map we found our parking area for the hotel. As we walked around the very large and historical harbour, Michael saw his future. Yes another boat, but not just any boat, an English steamer. We checked into our room which had a balcony view of the old town harbour. Sitting on the balcony drinking our wine I was thinking how nice it was to enjoy this moment looking at the water with someone special. Of course the someone special is drinking and drooling over the boat and thinking of how he would design it for our next house. After 2 bottles of wine we ventured out through the narrow streets of Chania only to find a beautiful open terrace restaurant with live traditional Cretan music and of course no dinner would be complete without a shot of Raki and watermelon.
