We woke up with the sun this morning and were up having coffee by 7 am! The kids all helped to pack up the van and so we were on the road by 830 am, saying goodbye to Kakadu. We drove without stopping to Mataranka and reached the caravan park around 1 pm. It's a huge park and we picked a site that we could stay hooked up on. Nick opened up the van to turn the power on and found green tree ants pouring out of our collapsible clothesline and climbing everywhere. We spent the next half hour trying to kill them all, as they weren't keen to run off and find the nearest tree!! We had lunch and then walked down to Bitter Springs, about a 500m walk from the caravan park. The Springs are fed by the Roper River and are a constant 32 degrees all year round. There are steps to enter the Springs at the top of the river and then the current drifts you along to steps at the lower end. A 50 m walk talks you back to the beginning and you start all over again. We did three circuits, each one taking about 15 minutes, before the lure of coffee and ice cream called. Most people sat on floatation devices but we didn't have any so we all swam it. A number of people commented on what great swimmers the kids were and although their strokes seem to have disappeared they have really improved in confidence with all the out door swimming we've done. We had a bit of rest back at the van and read for a while then the kids were keen to go back to the Hot Springs. We hired some noodles from the caravan park and this time just drifted in the current. Anna was so much slower drifting along in the current compared to everyone else that I had to sit behind her and push her along. As it was the boys over took us repeatedly and did a few extra circuits compared to us!! We were having a great time until some dodgy folk appeared who were drinking and smoking in the water. We decided to head home much to the kids distress and by the time we had showered them it was after 7 pm and they were all starving. Nick knocked up a chicken stir-fry and an 830 pm they were put to bed. At 835 pm they were fast asleep!!
