We arrived into Bangkok and got in a big pink taxi that took us to the Khao San Road, the famous backpacker area. It was exactly what we expected, we saw a million backpackers drinking a million buckets of alcohol(literally buckets), street performers, tie dye clothing stalls, street food stalls, it was so busy and it was 1am. We walked along and found our hostel the charoendee, and it was very nice, it was behind locked gates and you had to ring the bell to get in past midnight which was pretty safe and the room we were in was nice apart from the bathroom smelling of drains, welcome to Bangkok! Ash was loving the buzz of the place so wanted to go back out and have another look around, we sampled our first chang beer and the street food and gawped at the craziness!
The next day we went a bit mad buying things, there were hareem pants galore and Beck couldnt resist getting a pair of tye dye ones! She bought a beach bag and also we got lots of bracelets as they were only 30p each. We also tried out a fish spa because after a couple months of only wearing flip flops we both had terrible skin on our feet (beckys was the worst)! It was weird but it did work! We ate pad thai, spring rolls and nutella pancakes from the street food vendors (divine!) That night we got really drunk and a waiter tried to teach us some thai but it would not sink in and Ash made friends with a Danish man who he talked to for ages even though Ash can not speak Danish and the bloke could not speak English (?!) Beck got talking to this 70 year old hippy bloke who used to live in Hanley but now lives in Spain and had coverted to Buddism and was travelling the world alone before he got too old, very interesting guy. Ash was verging on stupidly drunk so Becky convinced him to go back to the room with her so she could get something (a lie) he sat on the bed saying hurry up I want to go back out but in about 10 seconds he was snoring, flat out, fully clothed on the bed!
The next day we got up and Ash was a little worse for ware, we got a breakfast of bacon, eggs, beans, toast, sausage and orange juice, ultimate hangover cure and we pottered about all day waiting for our bus and boat trip to take us to koh tao. We heard stories about people getting ripped off on these journeys and also having their things stolen from the luggage hold of the bus but we had no problems, the coach was really posh and we got good seats at the front where we could stretch our legs out and get a good nights kip. They even played a dodgy copy dvd of Captain America. The boat was a little less smooth, we got on it at Chumphon after a nights journey from 9pm to 5am on the coach. The 'pier' was handmade wooden rickety thing which was swaying all over the place with the weight of the people! The boat was a big catamaran and after being on it for 20 minutes pretty much 80% of the boat passengers were puking. Beck has never been seasick but the smell, sights and sounds of all those people puking into little plastic bags was making her feel ill! It was the roughest boat journey either of us had ever been on but Ash slept for the whole journey. In the end neither of us were sick and when we got off the boat we walked along the coast to find somewhere to stay. We stayed at Mr J's bungalows but after one night it was a bit far from the beach and restaurants and bars so we found somewhere closer, SBC Bungalows which was lovely too! We spent three days chilling out, sunbathing on the beach, sampling lots of different thai food and basically having a lovely time.
