We had set an alarm so we could make breakfast and when we got downstairs we found it was really busy. I didn't realise so many people were staying at the hostel. We got talking to a girl who was also going to Morro and agreed to share a taxi to the terminal.
After breakfast we headed upstairs to sort out our stuff. Once we had it all done we went out to get our bus tickets for the journey from Salvador to Maceio. There was a travel agent in town that could do it so we headed there. It was a really hot day again and I was sweating just walking a few yards. When we got to the place we found a big queue. We had 45 mins so I thought we had enough time. I was wrong however as the queue barely moved and there was only one person serving. A guy helped us to enquire but the lady behind the counter was too busy multitasking so we gave up and tried another place.
We went to a tour agent and she said she could do it but would charge us more. We needed the ticket and wanted to buy it before it sold out so agreed only to find out she couldn't take credit cards and we didn't have cash. It was annoying and we now had to get to the boat, so we headed back to the hostel and hoped we would be able to buy tickets on the island.
When we got to the hostel we grabbed our stuff and got into the taxi that was waiting for us. We were joined by two girls who were consultants (as they are apparently the only people that travel) in London on a two week holiday to Brazil. They were nice enough and we chatted to them in taxi and in the terminal while we waited for the boat.
When the time came we borded the boat, which was smaller than I thought it would be and waited for the off. As per standard it left late and it was one before we where on our way. The ride took about two and a half hours when it should have taken two and was quite choppy too. Shivani and I both felt a little queasy but werent sick. I listened to my audiobook and Shivani got some tips from the girls guidebook and slept a little.
When we finally got there we were presented with a pretty island and a busy port. As we were disembarking we approached by some guys asking if we wanted a taxi. They weren't actually taxis but wheelbarrows as the island didn't have roads or motorised traffic. We took one as it was really hot, our hostel was a 20 min walk away and up a hill too.
As we walked through the town we found it was really touristy and busy but it still looked nice and had a good feel to it. We then walked onto the beach and were greeted by a really pretty bay and beach. The back of the beach was lined with hostels, restaurants and bars. This was a proper little tourist resort.
We then followed our wheel barrow to the next beach where are hostel was located. We couldn't wait to check in and get onto the beach but on talking to reception found that they didn't have a room for us. We were both really annoyed and I spoke to a girl over the phone who apologised and said she would come and sort it out. I waited for her while Shivani went to see if she could find something for us.
I had to wait an hour and in the meantime Shivani had not much luck finding a room. The English speaking receptionist eventually came and said she had a room for us at a place close by and said our booking messed up due to a computer failure. The room at the other place was ok and we had to pay the same rate so took it.
The lady apoligsed a lot and said she could help us book the bus ticket so I went off with her to do that while Shivani freshened up. The lady booked the tickets but needed cash payment for them which I didnt have so I said I would come back later to get them.
When I got back to the room Shivani was ready but it was too late to go to the beach. We were both hungry though so decided to go out get some food and withdraw some money too. We walked along the beach front and ended up in town. There we settled on a Mexican place that could do vegi fajitas for Shivani and a traditional fish stew for me. The food took a while to come out but when it did was really good. The fish stew I had was really tasty and I could have had a lot more of it.
After dinner we went to get cash. There were only two banks in town and the queues were long. We needed the money so had to wait. We waited an hour to get to the front of the queue and when we did we couldn't get money out. Shivanis card didn't work so we went to the other bank where it didn't work either. It was really annoying and it seemed like everything was going wrong.
We still had my other card and some emergancy dollars so resolved to sort it out in the morning. We then headed back to the second beach which should be where the party happened in the evening. The walkway was now lined with drinks stalls with exotic fruit displays from which they would make fruit cocktails. Shivani had a citafur one and then we went and sat on the beach, where I got a beer while we sat and chatted. It was nearing the end of the trip and we reflected on it so far and what was still to come.
After we finished our drinks it was midnight and we decided to head to bed. The bars where now a little busier but the music was still mellow so nothing that we could dance too. We slowly walked back and then hit our rock solid bed and looked forward to the beach the next day.
