We had a long nights sleep and found that we had woken up at 11am and missed breakfast. We then slowly got ready and I took the laundry down to reception. They informed me they had no space for the it today and told me to go to a laundry down the street. I went and dropped it off, annoyingly finding it costed twice as much, but we needed it done.
I then went back to the hostel and booked boat tickets to Morro de Sao Paulo, an island where we would go tomorrow. I then went back to the room and we booked a hostel for Morro and researched our onward trip. Shivani had found a nice place in Maceio, which was half way between Salvador and Recife. It looked good so we decided on that.
It was early afternoon now and were hungry and needed to do some sightseeing in Salvador. We set out from the hotel and walked round the streets. We took some pictures and tried to head to the famous elevator. We walked passed a few main squares and some pretty churches. I ended up getting a bit lost and we found ourselves at Zulu, where we had dinner last night. We decided to eat there again as it was good yesterday and had more options. I took fish and chips and Shivani had lasagne. Mine wasn't that great but the local fish stew that the couple next to us are looked really good.
After the food we set off for the elevator. The streets were full of tourists and all the tourist attractions were busy. We eventually found the elevator and queued up to go inside. The line was pretty long and when we got to the front we realised it really was just a big lift. We took it down where it opened up to the big market. We went in there and walked around but it was pretty busy and there was nothing we wanted to buy so we came out.
There wasn't much else we wanted to see so we headed back up the elevator. At the top Shivani had an icecream before we slowly walked back towards the hostel. We had pretty much seen all we wanted to and it hadn't taken to long. There were museums and a couple of other areas but nothing looked that exciting.
On the way back we stopped to check on the laundry. It wasn't finished yet do we went for a coffee at a place close by with good views while we waited. After a coffee for Shivani and capriniha for me, I went and picked up the washing and we came back to the hostel.
We chilled for a while before getting ready to head out. It was Tuesday night and that was the big going out day in the historic centre. There were going to be street parties with live bands, effectively a mini carnival. We first headed to the steps where we were told a live band would be playing. When we got there we found it was rammed and mainly full of locals. We found a place at the front near the vendors.
The music they started playing was quite slow and there was a large crowd. As the night continued the music got a little faster and the crowd danced a little. The atmosphere was quite good and Shivani and I had fun. We drank a few beers and I tried a local snack, which was quite nice.
Near the end of the performance we decided to head into town to see what else was going on. At the bottom of the hill there were lots of places selling food, I was tempted but it didn't look that good. We then went further into town and found ourselves behind a large band playing drums and being followed by a big crowd. We shimmed along the road up towards the main square behind the crowd. There was a party atmosphere and I thought this must be what carnival was like.
When we reached the main square we left the group and headed to one of the vendors and got some drinks. We then sat in the square and watched the scene. There were loads of people sitting and drinking and you could hear all the music in the background. There was also a young group of girls in front of us dancing and shaking their considerable asses. I wondered if they were working but I don't think they were.
After we finished our drinks we got some popcorn and headed to explore a few more streets. The scene was much the same with music blaring and people chilling out on the streets. A few clubs had opened now too but it was getting late and music didn't seem like something we could dance to, so we headed back to the hostel and bed. It had been a good night and I felt we had really experienced a bit of the local culture.
