We woke up early and got ready for breakfast. The sun had just about risen and we were served a breakfast of bread and eggs. Shivani was a bit tired in the morning and was a bit slow moving.
We were supposed to leave at 6am but our driver did not show up for ages as he was apparently saving another car stick in the flats. We hoped this was the case and not that he was drunk and hungover.
When he finally did come we loaded the car and set off, heading south to go and see the volcanoes and lagoons. I luckily got the front seat, which was nice as we had to cover quite some ground. The jeep had a wire so that I could connect my iPhone up and the playlist I had made went down quite well.
For our first stop was a viewing point for a volcano. This one was semi dormant but still had smoke coming out of one peak. We were quite far away and I had hoped we would have got closer but that was it and we moved on to view some lagoons.
The first one we stopped at was a small one with a whiteish crust to it. It had some flamingos on it and our guide explained the difference between a lake and a lagoon. It was a bit muddy and as we were high up was windy and cold too.
We then moved on through some pretty amazing landscape. We went through the mountains and scenery was ever changing with all different colours of rocks. It was also made more amazing by the fact there were wasnt much to distrube us, we only bumped into a few other cars and a couple of cyclists who had been travelling for 2 years cycling from North America to the South.
We then stopped at another lagoon for lunch. This one was much bigger and surrounded by some red hills. It was quite open and the wind whipped up some small twisters on it. We took shelter behind a small wall which was part of the abandoned site where they apparently made bricks from the clay and water from the lagoon. It was surprising to think anyone could have lived out here.
After a wait we were served a lunch of chicken, potatoes and salad, with Shivani getting mushrooms instead of chicken. It wasn't that nice but was filling.
We then moved on quickly stopping at another lake which was green and had many more flamingos on. This would have been a nicer stop although it was so windy we could barely get out of the car.
Our next stop was a set of big stones that were lying in the valley between the mountains. One main one was shaped like a tree and surrounded be many others that everyone was climbing on and taking pictures from.
After that we made our way to the final and best stop of the day, lagoona Colorado or the red lake. This one was an amazing site and was also covered with lots of flamingos. We took loads of pictures there and we're stunned by its beauty and wondered why we had never heard of it before. We spent a while there and also took a look round the visitors centre too.
We then headed to our hostel, which promised to be some very basic accommodation although there was apparently a chance of a shower. When we got there we found we had a seven bed dorm which we would share with our car mates, and a shared bathroom which we had to share with six other rooms.
We had gotten to know are car mates well now and they were a good bunch. There was Paul and Genna who were teachers from Dubai and experienced travellers. Then there was Janeck who was a French guy who had been travelling with the teachers for the last couple of weeks. And lastly there were Heidi and Yash who were a funny couple, with Heidi being South African and newly pregnant and Yash being Iranian and funnily studied at Warwick at exactly the same time as me.
As we waited for dinner, Yash brought out a bottle of rum and we all sat down and had a drink. One of the guys from the other car had a mini guitar and we sang some songs as we waited. We then got on to playing spoof, quickly finishing the bottle and heading out to buy another. We had really good fun and this was what I had really imagined travelling to be.
We all got a little tipsy and when they guide came out to give us some more history he was quickly shouted down and had to stop. We had to wait an age for dinner and when it came out it was soup followed by chips covered in meat, eggs and tomato. It wasnt very nice but we were hungry so ate it.
After dinner we went to the dorms and got into bed. We had quite some jokes before lights went out and we went to sleep.
