We woke up quickly got ready and headed to the airport. We got there on time and after checking in we went for a subway as Shivani was excited to see a chain.
After eating we waited for the plane which was late. It came 20 minutes late and was a tiny 12 person propeller plane. We had the front seats and could see into the cockpit which was pretty cool. The journey lasted an hour and just as we came into Unuyi I could see the white salt flat going off into the distance. I think this was much better than taking the coach for 12 hours which we later heard was not much fun.
After landing at the tiny airport we picked up our bags and headed to the town on the bus. Unuyi was really small and had a touristy feel to it, I don't think we missed much by not staying there.
After finding the tourist agency we bought some supplies and waited for our jeep to leave. We were paired with two other English couples and a French guy. It seemed to be a good group.
Our first stop was the train graveyard. This was close by to Unuyi and was an interesting stop where we got some good pictures.
We then moved towards the salt flats we first stopped at a salt factory where they showed us how they refine and bag salt. We then had time to look at the products they sold too.
We then moved onto the salt flats proper the scenery was spectacular and the white went on for miles. We stopped a couple of times and got explanations about how it is formed and how it is mined. We then stopped at a salt hotel, where we took lots of perspective shoots. It was pretty difficult to get them right but we got a couple of goods one. We then had lunch which consisted of alpaca, a salad and quinoa. Shivani got some avocado. We had a chocolate and banana for dessert.
We then went outside and took some more shots. After we moved on further into the flats. We came across an island of cacti which was like an oasis in a dessert. It was really strange but really interesting too. We got an explanation from the guide about it which didn't make much sense but then went for a walk round, climbing to top. The view was pretty amazing but as the sun began to drop the wind really picked up and we quickly headed back to the car.
We had to wait there a while for the drivers but when they came back we moved on. It was getting late and we stopped to watch the sunset. It was a pretty beautiful scene as we were the only ones around for miles.
After the sun set we went to our salt hotel which was surprisingly good and we luckily had our own room although we had to share a bathroom. After settling in we got tea and biscuits and then waited for dinner. We had some interesting history about Bolivia from our guide although not all of it made sense.
We had to wait for long time for dinner and when it came it wasn't very good. It consisted of soup followed by pasta. After dinner we went to bed as we had an early start and were tired. We went to sleep on our salt beds and set our alarm for 5.30am.
