We went to the sea turtle hatchery this morning and as we approached the front gates I started to feel unsure if it was going to be worth the money as we were going to pay 500 rupees, we haggled the price down to 400 rupees as the guide book said it was 300 rupees. It was a tour too, so we all struggled to understand the guy at the start and over time it became easier. There was an English woman called Jane who was a volunteer there so she helped us around!
The place was bigger than I expected and we were shown the babies first! They were so adorable and I got the chance to hold one. The one that I held was so hyper and kept moving around. It was just adorable.
We proceeded to see more turtles, they had lots of cement tanks to accommodate the turtles and I must say I was impressed. I was expecting it to be a bit run down and uncared for. But I was wrong, the turtles are in good living conditions and even had a nurse to look after them! I then had the chance to hold an adult one and it was just beautiful.
They had some turtles who were disabled as some of them had one leg missing, two arms missing and I was so saddened to see a turtle who was completely limbless. The people who looks after her has to move her around regularly during the day.
The next tank held blind turtles and I was so shocked to hear that some of them were tortured and have been blinded in the progress. There was one turtle who had a damaged shell, he has been burned so bad in the fire that he was blinded and ruined his shell.
I laughed at the fact the man who showed me around pointed to my skin and said come on. So I realised there was a white turtle! Good choice how to explain it was white! It was so pretty, with a shade of green on the shell and it was the only one.
I really loved at the fact that they were being looked after so well.
At the end of the tanks there was long table with some photographs, guestbook and donation box. So I had a look and realised the place was severely damaged by tsunami and killed many turtles. As I was looking through the photographs, I felt really sad and I decided to put some money in donation box as it was for a really good cause. The photographs were heartbreaking to look at.
We then looked at the shops and the prices were unbelievable so I didn't get anything and we then left. I was left feeling really happy as I was poorly all weekend.
