Today I woke up late again and missed breakfast at the hostel so I just went to Subway for "breakfast". I got a text from Pedro while I was still asleep saying that he and his friends were going to the castle. But I saw them walking past when I was at Subway so I texted him again and then we met at the entrance. Edinburgh castle was really interesting, we spent about 2 and a half hours there, doing the guided tour and then going to all the exhibits. The guide gave us a lot of intersting history and was really funny. The most interesting thing was about the now English corronation stone, which was originally the Scottish corronation stone. It was stolen by the English when they stormed Edinburgh castle in the late 1600s I think and then just as an insult to the Scottish, the English King at the time (I can't remember who it was) made a special place in Westminster Abbey under a special corronation chair and was from there on in used for the Corronation of English Kings and Queens. But a few years ago, Queen Elizabeth II said that the stone should return to Scotland, so I went to see it at the castle along with all of the old Scottish crown jewels. But we had a good look at all the different Exhibits and buildings there including the old prison cells undergroud which was quite cool.
We then went over to Carlton Hill which a big hill at the other end of the Royal Mile to the castle. It has an unfinished copy of the Pantheon up there and a couple of other nice buildings, but my favourite part of it was the view. We got there right at the start of sunset so the view of the city was quite spectular. The sun sets too early here though, It was only 4:30 when it got completely dark.
We then just went Maccas and got dinner there. But when we got back to the hostel we found it was burger night here as well, so I grabbed a burger here as well. I then talked to Pedro about doing an underground/ ghost tour. So we were trying to organise to do that together, but we ended doing seperate ones because they found one that was all in Spanish. So I just did one by myself. My guide was really good, he built it up really well. We just walked around the city a bit and he talked about the history of the city and as a few young girls walked past he said "and here come some of the typical young drunks of Edinburgh". To which the girls were absolutely disgusted by and were saying "how dare he judge people like that just by looking at us, it's just so wrong". He was clearly only joking when he said so he went off and followed them for a while just to stir them up a bit more which was quite funny. It got really good though, when we went down to the vaults under the city which used to be used as prison cells. But the guide talked more about when they were inhabbited by the poor and the horrible things that used to happen down there, even how during the fires about 15 people had basically cooked to death because of the heat being conducted in the stone. He built up the stories really well and made it all seem quite real. The scariest room was one that was apparently extremely haunted and had a circle of stones right in the middle of the room. The guide said repeatedly not to go in the circle while telling stories of how on a previous tour, one guy who was being quite cocky had gone in to the circle and had a heart attack. I still wanted to go in the circle just to see if anything did happen, but I didn't want to be the only one who did it so I didn't end up doing it. The last room was meant to be as haunted as it gets, this was where a lot of people had died during the fires. He spent a long time building up and saying that he often gets noises and stuff in the room, and then right at the end a woman outside screamed and then all the other women screamed and one who was outside fainted. I'm still not sure what caused it, whether one of the women there was an actor set up to do it or someone just screamed and everyone else did. Either way it was good finish to it.
I then just went up to the bar and got the free shot of whiskey that came with the tour. Then I met up with Pedro and his friends and went to a couple of bars with them.
