On our drive through from Las Vegas we went over the Hoover Dam, which was busy as it was President's Day, but impressive nonetheless. They have recently built a new bridge going parallel to it that is massive. We then headed to Utah, seeming to pass through Arizona and Nevada state lines several times on the way. Finally arrived to the red rock canyon that is Zion National Park. The road through it is red as they must use the local stone. When we were setting up for the night we were treated to a glorious sunset, with the rocks gleaming red and orange! We then had a very chilly night!
Today we drove up the Canyon and attempted to walk up to Angel's Landing, which proved pretty difficult in the snow capped clifftops. We made it up the trail through the canyon, which was stunning. Angel's Landing is on top of a rocky outcrop with stunning views of the canyon. There is a chain to cling to on the trail up as there are sheer cliffs on either side. It was not easy with our sneakers and the snow and ice, but we made it about halfway to the first lookout. However, the next bit looked extremely menacing so we decided we'd have to come back in summer!
After lunch on our way down we drove to the end of the canyon and walked the river trail, which was nice with waterfalls and snow falls down the cliffs. It is a popular place for canyoning up the river, but we didn't have the right gear for winter. It was then back to camp for dinner with the glorious sunset!
