Only a 2.5 hour drive to San Antonio and we were greeted by a temperature of 38 degrees outside the van. Somehow the air was dryer though, and so much more bearable without the sticky muggyness like we had in West Virginia. We had a few hours to explore the city which is beautiful. It had a gorgeous river walk with tweeny little 'hobit bridges' (or so I like to call them) and sunny little restaurants lining the river. We stopped for lunch at a Mexican place which was yum, and then set off to do a bit of shopping. We found a wonderful place that sold cowboy boots and hats, and the friendly salesman sold me a black cowboy style sunhat which looks awesome.
Later we were taken to the Hamleton Pool Reserve springs which were beautiful. We swam in the cool water hidden amongst trees and cacti. If we hadn't been told it was there we'd never have seen it. As water cascaded off the cliff above, we swam under it and looked up. It was so pretty, as in the sunlight it looked like little pearls falling in to the water.
When we had sufficiently cooled off, we drove to our camp site where we were told we were getting air comditioned cabins instead if tents! Everyone was exceedingly happy about this after the terrible claustrophobia of our tents in the heat the night before.
Once settled in our temporary homes we headed out to The Saltlick in Austin, a superb texas BBQ place that seriously knows how to do meat! We tucked in to a '3 meat combo' BBQ'd ona massssive grill and served with potatoe salad to die for and coleslaw which is out of this world! To make it even better, it was a BYOB (bring your own beer) place which was a lot of fun. I fear i may quite possibly go home obese!
