Erldunda to Yulara (Uluru)
Up early and pack up by 8.30, we are starting to get quite a groove going with pack up it takes only 30 mins but the bulk of that time is in the hitching up as this is the most important part of the job.As you would normally think this run would be more desert and rocks but it was far from that after quite a bit of rain it was green with wild flowers and trees shooting new growth. The drive started well with everyone settling in for a big one, when we were flagged down to help with a van that had lost its electrics and couldn't start (note top gear reference). So we pulled the rig over to try and start the car with the thumper. Unfortunately it didn't have enough to get it started so Steve made a wonderful turn around and we got it started with the Jumper leads much to the delight of the nice bloke and his little girl. Steve did another wonderful turn and we were back on the road, this is no mean feat as the roads in NT are good so far but they don't have the shoulders made like Vic and SA. He is a wonderful pilot, oh and we are still in the good books as we are keeping up with the spreadsheet which makes him happy.
A bit further on we spot something in the distance and Steve goes (bless his heart)" i can see Uluru" (as we had been told you could see it a long way in the distance) but alas it was Mt Connor. I must say though, that it was magnificent. Again we were with a group of Oldies on a bus (note to self avoid AAT buses full of old dears) and they didn't invite us for tea !! Lots of photos later and a look over the Dune at a lake with water in it and we were off. I feel very privileged this trip as we are seeing the red heart of Aus with her greenery on it is really amazing (note will use this word a lot).
You would think that the road to Uluru is flat but it is quite hilly going up and down red dunes covered in Mulga and Sheoak woods. Then, at last, we spotted her; she was a peachy colour pecking over the dunes. She would come in and out of sight for at least 20k's and we were all gob smacked by the sheer size and brilliance of the heart of Aus.
