Today we woke up at 6:30 and got ready to head into Athens. it has been two early days in a row now. We jump ahead another hour here so we ar enow 8 hours ahead of everyone at home. We made it downstairs to get breakfest at the hotel buffet and then walked to the nearest train station to hop on the train. The train ride was about 45 minutes into Athens. When we arrived we walked around a really pretty park until we found a bus tour company that had a double decker bus and would allow us to tour Athens all day and get off at all the historical sports including down by the water. We got on the tour bus and of course headed to the top so we could get a tan during our tour. Our first stop was the archeologist historical museum. I personally am usually not a fan of history museums but it was interesting to see some of the things on display. After the museum we walked across the street to get some lunch at a really good place that served pizzas, sandwiches, salads and a bunch of other stuff. We caught the bus again after lunch to continue on our bus tour of Athens. Our next stop was at the Parthenon and some of the ancient ruins. We hiked up the hill and made It all the way to the top. We walked around for most of the afternoon. We did some shopping near some of the ancient ruins for souvenirs and stuff and some people stopped for Gelato.
We returned back to the bus for the "sea scenery tour". The bus took as all over down by the water. We saw where the bug cruise lines dock and big marinas with super nice yachts. The bus tour was really cool because we got to see so much more of the city that we would have ever been able to see by foot.
Athens is much bigger and the buildings are on top of each other. I did not expect Athens to be the way it is. I would describe it as a San Francisco mushed together ten times with less tall buildings. The city seems pretty dirty with a lot of graffiti. Apparently it is not a safe place for girls alone at all and you have to be very careful. It was really cool to learn about the history and see all of it firsthand tho. Pictures do not do any of Greece justice, it is so hard to capture he size and architecture as a whole from a camera :(
We hopped on the train to head back to the hotel around 6:00. At this point we were all exhausted from the 85 degree day and walking so much. It was a long train ride back. A shower has never felt so nice. I have sunburn worse that I have ever experienced in my whole life tho. Michelle is also burnt to a crisp. We both look ridiculous. I am not used to getting burnet especially like this; It is horrible to the point of feeling sick. blah….that will teach me to apply sunscreen every hour now while I am here. I put sunscreen on three times today but I guess the sun is just that good here :)
We had dinner at the hotel and got a drink at the bar after we all got showered and ready to go. I had a Greek grilled chicken salad with Greek yogurt dressing on it. It was interesting but really good. Michelle had a Greek burger which she said she liked as well. Food and everything else is way cheaper here than in other Europe countries we have visited, its awesome. Dinner took a while to get and finish and we just hung around and relaxed a bit while we finished up drinks. We just got done with dinner and a few people left to walk into the main part of town where our hotel is and find a liquor store and a few other things. I just got back to the hotel room. Our room is about 10x10 and we share with five girls! It is a talent being able to get five of us ready in the morning in one room with one shower tho! I think it is going to be another fire on the beach kind of night. We will see how wine + headache + extreme sunburn continue to mix. So far not well. I might have to call it a somewhat early night and catch up on some sleep so I am ready for a long day at the beach tomorrow. Saturday we are going island hopping by boat all day which should be the highlight of the entire Greece trip! Hope everyone is getting some of this warm weather at home!
