MeznG. In the air, on the road, river or sea again
Today is a big day. We have a 3 hour train ride to get from the Port of Warnemunde to the city of Berlin. The plan for the day is an overview of the city by coach and then time on our own. Our guide is a typical 'Berliner ' - her words. Blue eyed blonde hair and fun.( 2 out of 3 ) Her hair colour is definitely not natural! She takes us to the Berlin Wall site and unexpectedly we are able to get out and take photos. In fact all of the sites we visited, we were able to stop and take photos. This was unexpected because the tour was meant to be just an overview and we were to revisit these sites on our own later. I though this was fantastic as it was 30 degrees and walking back to these places was going to be hot. Of course I should have known that we were going to do it again anyway! The Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and the Holocaust memorial are all known must see sites in Berlin. Once the tour is done we are left on our own to firstly find some lunch and then hit the streets to have a further look around. Berlin was obviously obliterated during the Word Wars and as such there is not a lot of 'old' buildings but there are significant sites. As we know the wall came down in 1988 and there is now only a stretch of just over a kilometer still standing in one place and there is another open air museum dedicated to the wall in another area that we see as we are taken back to the train. The reminder of the wall and the division of Berlin is literally set in stone as there is 2 cobblestone parallel paths that trace where the wall once stood. I say 2 paths because in fact there were 2 walls one for the East and one for the West. Our walk on our own covers a bit of this path as we head back to the Holocaust Memorial which is a square of stone structures of different heights and on uneven ground symbolizing the lives of the Jews that were Persecuted and killed by the Nazis. Then we enter the Tiergarten, a huge park in the middle of the city. Berlin s a very green city with a lot of parks and gardens and statues, they love their statues and of course we have a photo of most of them even though we have no idea who they are! Usually where there is a statue or monument, there is also a photo of its destruction during the 2nd world war and its subsequent restoration. Walking through the Tiergarten and coming out the other side we are standing on the Bismark Strabe, Where if you look left you see the Siegessaule (Victory Column) And to the right is the Brandenburg Gate. It's a great avenue reminds a bit of the Champlysse in Paris. Not far from here is the Reichstag (German Parliament) a very grand building. We have just enough time to stop for a beer before getting back to the meeting point for the train ride back to Warnemunde and our ship. It has been a very long day today but Berlin was well worth the visit. P.s. The iPhone Glenn was using that actually belonged to Holly, forgot to get off the bus in Berlin so we are pretty sure that by now it is speaking German and living a total different life! Sorry Holly Tomorrow we will wake up in Kiel.
