Last day on the ship as we dock in Bergen at approx 2.30pm.
Bags are packed and put out for collection by 9am and we will vacate our room by 10am and hopefully find a spot in one of the lounge areas.
At breakfast this morning I had a chat with one of the chefs and he said they were running around like squirrels today, very busy. He said that this was the largest number of passengers they have had on board and that the next cruise leaving Bergen this afternoon will be a lot less passengers. I told them that Hurtigruten is getting advertised in Australia and he was so excited that I was all the way from Australia. He wants to come to Australia and see all the 'funny' animals particularly the little lizards that make the funny noise. I guessed he meant the barking gecko. Maybe one day he will come but I suggested he allow a lot of time.
On this ship English speaking passengers are a minority, very few Australians, some British and few Americans and Canadians. The majority are German or German speaking. Everything we do or hear is delivered in 3 sometimes 4 languages. English, German, Norwegian and sometimes French.
It was very scenic cruising through to Bergen, lots of islands that we passed quite close to. So mNy little villages and farms. It's a bit of a dull day and we don't hold out too much hope for Bergen as it has a reputation for rain.
Disembarking is the most orderly we have ever experienced and we get a taxi to our hotel which is in the city centre, drop our bags and head out.
We are not gone long when it starts to rain so Bergen's reputation does not let it down.
Best thing to do is head into a cafe for a coffee. Rain has eased so we walk up and down and around the streets. It's quite a nice city built on 7 mountains so it's a lot of up and down and a lot of rock.
Tossing up the best way to get to the airport in the morning, bus, light rail or taxi?
We get some advice from the tourist info and end up purchasing a bus ticket. It's a short flat walk from our hotel to the stop and its about $30 cheaper than a taxi. The light rail is a cheaper option but it's a bit further away from the hotel and if it's raining it won't be a pleasant way to start the day.
We stop for 'last drinks' at a bar just off the lane ways that have umbrellas suspended overhead. Very effective and creative look.
Bergen is gearing up for a world cycling event which begins on Saturday so there are heaps of marquees and stalls being set up across the city. It will be quite hectic and I can't imagine how comfortable it will be for the cyclists riding on these cobblestone streets.
Before heading back to the hotel we stop and share a pizza on the harbour then go and repack ready for the long trip home.
Tomorrow is a travel day, leaving Bergen at 10.25am Norway time and arriving in Adelaide about 26 hours later. We have seen so much in the past month and it has been great but it will be nice to be home.
