Woke at 1.25am this morning to an announcement to say the Northern Lights were visible from the left hand side of the ship, of course we are on the right hand side!. I shook Glenn to tell him then quickly grabbed some trackies and a top and raced outside. I couldn't see anything except a grey/brown streak across the sky. I found out later in the day that was all there was to see. It's possible they could appear again as we go further north.
By the time I came back to the room, Glenn was sound asleep again.
This morning we travel into the Trondheim Fjord to Trondheim, the former capital of Norway which sits at the mouth of the river Nid.
It's a town of wooden buildings the largest being Stifsgården Palace. Because we are here early and it's Sunday, it's very quiet and there is no wind about so not a ripple on the water so the reflective photos a beautiful. A 20 minute walk into town brings us to Nidaros Cathedral. First built over the holy shrine of St Olav in the 11th century , it was severely damaged by fire several times but restoration work started in 1869 and it is known as one of Northern Europes greatest gothic memorials. The stained glass windows are very beautiful. Before heading back to the ship we stop for coffee and a muffin of course and it's the best coffee of the trip!
Back onboard and it's lunch, then a tasting of blue lip mussels (surprisingly nice) we pass a POI being Munkholmen islet, a monastery which dates back to the Middle Ages, Kjeungskjær Lighthouse and hundreds of islands and skerries.
Late in the afternoon we pass Stokksund which is very narrow passage between the islands.
We have an information session about the upcoming shore excursions and then a 30 minute presentation to learn more about Norway. No time to rest, it's very busy onboard!
Early in the morning we will cross the Arctic Circle which is an invisible border at 66°33' north. We will all need to be on deck when this happens but before that we have dinner at 8 and a movie presentation about the Northern Lights at 10pm. Busy busy!
