Mel and Stu missing you
Decided to get the local buses back from the internet cafe in cancun after our long walk (at only 30p not too much of an expense!). On the last bit we walked past a local school performing a cultural dance on the roadside, which was pretty cool.
Had to go to a supermarket for dinner, where we bought Maize tortillas (the staple of Central America), some local hams and cheese and a pot of sausages in sauce which we ate with some trepidation but no harm has come of it!
Another early start the next morning for our 6 o'clock bus to Belize. Fairly comfortable bus to the border where we met our connection straight away, which was great but left us no time to eat our food so had an impromptu picnic between Mexican and Belize immigration to avoid moving food across the border! At orangewalk a whole market was allowed aboard the bus to peddle their wares, but we were stingy and it did not look too good. They showed Romeo must Die on that bus, which to Mel's great appreciation was solely car chases and kung-fu. Arrived in Belize City about 3pm and easily found Isabel's Hostel which was very nice if a bit expensive. Mel finally got to go the toilet after the bathroom on the bus being broken!
We were not overly impressed with Belize City, which really has nothing in it and is quite a dingy place. Tried to find the Tourist Information Centre only to be told it had moved 3 miles outside of the city, and then wandered around trying to find an internet cafe and a restaurant. The drains were open and pavement cracked open over the gutters, which both housed alot of fish! Ultimately ended up back at the guesthouse and a restaurant opposite it called Marlins Fish bar where ther food was very basic but quite substancial, rice and beans, Mel's served with a fish (including head and fins), Stu's with pork bones! Decided that we might as well leave Belize tomorrow.
For the first time we had no enforced wake up time but were still up at 7, so took a wander to the bit of the city we hadn't explored yesterday, including Bird Island on Rhi's advice. Nothing was open, and although the walk was pleasant and the locals friendly, there really is nothing here. We had Fry Jacks for breakfast, which is fried flour.
Love from the country with fish lined gutters
