Left Frans Josef for Queenstown this morning. Our friend Leigh drank a bit too much at the pub the night before and puked in a bag right behind me for the first hour. Poor guy. Our first stop was a hike down to Lake Mattheson followed by a stop at Thunder Falls. It was really calm outside and the sun was out..yay! After watching Borat on the bus, we decided to get off the bus at Wanaka with our friends instead of taking it all the way down to Queenstown. Wanaka is a quiet little village that sits on a lake surrounded by mountains. There are huge grassy parks and lots of trails for biking/hiking. Supposedly it is what Queenstown was like 20 years ago before it became "built up." Stayed at a hostel called the Purple Cow. It's a really pretty log cabin lodge with a fireplace and huge windows in the common room that overlook the lake and mountains. Our roomie Frida from Germany was pretty cool. After walking around for a bit, we made a huge chicken and vegetable salad at the hostel and watched the 8:00pm showing of Mr and Mrs Smith in the projector room.
