We had met a nice English couple a few days ago and decided to travel over the next couple of days in convoy to the glaciers. It turned out that I was good friends with her cousin...such a small world! We reached Fox glacier and did a short walk to the base. We then went our seperate ways as they were on a tighter schedule.
The next day we drove to Franz Josef where we booked a guided full day glacier hike. We were prepared for the rain as it rains for 265 days a year there. New Zealanders have cleverly nicknamed Westland, 'Wetland'... so the next morning came and there wasn't a cloud in the sky, we had perfect weather all day. The walk itself was so much fun and so different to everything else we have done in New Zealand. Our group of 9 was the first to go up. There are no set paths on the glacier as it is constantly changing, so our guide took us wherever he wanted. We went through caverns, ice caves and walking on top of pinnacles with big vertical drops either side. It was such a great day and the best way to finish off our adventures in New Zealand. After all that healthy walking we headed for the local curry house... two more lamb bhunas!
We still had time to visit sunny Nelson and sell our trusted van 'Annie' to a nice lady in Motueka - making a tidy profit! We caught the bus down to Christchurch to stay with Matt's cousin Clare again until the 23rd May when we head for Fiji. We have had such an amazing time here and have enjoyed it equally as much as Oz but for totally different reasons... time for the beach now though!
